Gerhard Mercator (5th March 1512 Rupelmonde – 2nd December 1594 Duisburg) was a Flemish cartographer and mathematician of German origin. The Mercator projection is named after him. In 1569 he invented a new manner of projection that until today still bears his name. He used the word “atlas” as the name that is given to a collection of maps and in 1570 he persuaded Abraham Orteli to compile the first modern atlas that was entitled “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”. In addition, he started piece by piece to print and publish his very own atlas. The first volume was published in 1578 and it comprised corrected versions of Ptolemy’s maps.
